Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: BA1113 - Electronic Calculator Applications
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: Three credit hours lecture. This course includes instruction on electronic
printing calculators with emphasis on solving business problems. The
individualized progress method of instruction is used. For each unit of
credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and
two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Business Administrative Technology program is consistent with the
mission of Seward County Community College/Area Technical School. The program will provide students
with quality learning opportunities and experiences to meet the diverse,
changing needs for the development of better futures.
- TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
- Office Machines with Excel Applications, Sixth Edition. McKenzie, Jimmy C., Hughes, Robert J., 2003; Prentice Hall.
- SCCC/ATS OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to fulfill the following SCCC/ATS Outcomes.
- Outcome #3. Solve problems using a variety of techniques and technologies.
- Outcome #4. Think critically by gathering facts, generating insights, analyzing data, and evaluating information.
- Outcome #5. Utilize current technology relevant to their respective disciplines.
- COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon acceptable completion of the course competencies and an average of 85 percent or higher on mastery assessments, the student will be able to:
- Develop ability to operate electronic calculators properly by
- Using the appropriate fingering and hand position while operating the ten-key pad;
- Keeping eyes on copy;
- Identifying and using special-function keys.
- Develop ability to key with speed and accuracy through
- Keying a minimum of 85 correct digits per minute on a four-minute timing;
- Recognizing when an error is made and correcting it;
- Proofreading a machine tape for accuracy.
- Demonstrate problem-solving ability in business applications by performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division calculations using the touch method; identifying sequences to be followed in solving multiple operation problems; solving word problems and business application problems.
- COURSE OUTLINE:
- Develop ability to operate the ten-key keyboard using the touch method by:
- Identifying control keys and understanding use
- Entering numbers using correct machine and hand positions
- Learning to make corrections
- Proofreading for accuracy
- Develop ability to key with speed and accuracy.
- Demonstrate problem-solving ability in business applications
